Granted by the Ministry of Education, CelpeBras is the only official Portuguese as a Foreign Language Proficiency Certificate. There are four levels: intermediate, upper intermediate, advanced and upper advanced. CelpeBras is administered in Brazil and other countries, with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Relations. The certificate is accepted by companies and educational institutions around the world. In Brazil, it is required by universities for enrollment in graduation courses and post-graduation programs.
Portuguese as a Foreign Language Proficiency Certificate (Celpe-Bras) is granted to foreigners who perform satisfactorily in a standard Portuguese test developed by the Ministry of Education.
As of 2009, the National Educational Research and Study Institute (Inep) is responsible for the examination.
